Get those feet on the pegs!

I live in Hollister, where it seems like there are about five motorcycles per block--we're a city of gearheads, largely.  But it's frequently clear that many of our riders are either poorly trained or just plain sloppy.

Yeah, I'm going to talk about one of my pet peeves--riders who don't keep their feet on their pegs when they should.

Essentially, the only time your feet should not be on the pegs is when you are stopped, and I mean completely.  Practice this by putting your feet down after you have stopped the bike completely--after that slight lurch back that happens after stopping.  Depending on the avarice of your local police department, you should be sure to get your feet on the ground as well to avoid a ticket for not coming to a complete stop.  And when getting going again, get your feet back up on the pegs as you let the clutch out and get moving again; the earlier the better.

This is an investment of discipline and balance, and the payoffs are in safety, superior technique, and you'll look cooler because you appear--and are--more in control of your machine.  You will achive better balance at any speed, and you'll avoid the chance of getting your foot caught between the bike and the road.  This reduces your chance of an accident and increases your enjoyment of your ride.
